25th Anniversary Screening: Cuban Roots, Bronx Stories

  • Bronx Music Hall 438 East 163rd Street The Bronx, NY, 10451 United States (map)

Join us for a special screening and event celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Pam Sporn's acclaimed film "Cuban Roots, Bronx Stories: An Afro-Cuban Coming of Age Story."

One of the few films to explore AfroLatinidad from a Black Cuban-American perspective, Cuban Roots Bronx Stories celebrates its 25th anniversary with a 4K digital restoration. This unique film traces the historical journey of one family from Jamaica to Cuba in the early 20th century during the sugar boom, to the turbulent 1960s Bronx shortly after the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and their re-encounter with Cuba in the 1990s. The tender personal stories reveal nuanced and complex ways to consider migration, Blackness, and US-Cuba relations.

Following the screening, delve deeper into the power of Black narratives with an important panel discussion: "Black Stories, Enduring Narratives." We'll explore the vital importance of preserving and celebrating these stories, particularly within the vibrant context of the Bronx and its role in showcasing the diverse tapestry of AfroLatine experiences. This discussion will illuminate how these narratives contribute to the ongoing struggle for Black liberation and will feature Janel Martinez, Pam Sporn, and Pablo Foster in a conversation moderated by Josue Perea.

The evening will conclude with an electrifying performance by Bobby Sanabria & Sexteto Ibiano, transporting us with the infectious rhythms and soulful sounds of Afro-Cuban music.
